The 65th Infantry Regiment Borinqueneers Veteran’s Apartments provides quality affordable housing for independent and disabled veterans and their families. Located across from Chicago’s historic Humboldt Park, the new four story structure was erected on vacant land donated by the Norwegian American Hospital on a site adjoining a diverse, pedestrian friendly residential and retail neighborhood. The new building is a natural transitional bridge between the larger hospital building and the smaller neighborhood dwellings. It fills a gap in the park-facing street facade replacing institutional parking with residential oriented activities and presence. A mix of face brick, metal panels and colored composition panels form facades punctuated by aluminum windows. A larger, more formal wall faces the park while flanking facades are detailed by smaller repetitive rectangular masses in deference to the height and rhythm of nearby vintage homes. Like its neighbors, the building nests in a bed of landscaping an all frontages. A tall brick pier highlights the front door along side a broad glazed storefront that adds transparency and a visual connection to the activities in and around the building. A walkway and canopy extend east from the building toward the hospital bisecting the site thereby reducing the impact of its parking in deference to the pedestrian and landscaped yards.
