40 E. Garfield Blvd.
Chicago, Illinois

Located on Garfield Boulevard, this historic national landmark is planned for a renovation and façade restoration for 102 dwellings with ground floor commercial uses and indoor parking. The conversion work will reopen dozens of windows closed off by previous remodelings while taking advantage of high ceilings and large bays for the new apartments. The Schulze Bakery Building, built in 1914 was the home of Butternut Bread and the first time continuous conveyor ovens were used in such production. Designed by Alfred Aushlager and Son, the building design sought to reinforce the notion of quality, cleanliness and superiority of the product through the blend of white glazed masonry materials and architectural ornamentation. The proposed renovation will respect the building massing and structure and fenestration.
